Upstream Indie spoke with industry veteran Kilo M.O.E. about his newest project Fly G'z and Palm Treez, the current pandemic, and what's to come. Read the full interview below.
For our followers who may be unfamiliar, could you describe your style?
What's the best song or project to get introduced to Kilo M.O.E.My style is completely unorthodox. Its this thing I created thats the Golden Era Punchy Wit that sits atop of the newest production. Best way I can describe it. '87-'88 Gangsta vibes on digital. Dr. Dre The Chronic Of course!! Never heard anything like it and still havent. It was a thing you had to be there to truly experience.
We loved your newest album Fly G'z and Palm Treez. What inspired this project?
Thank you! I lived in SW Florida for five years. The sound, feel, and stories come from this time period. I concocted the concept on one of my many dozen trips down there hanging out. I started my label down there and also built alot of relationships and at the same time lost alot. Its literally what My years in Florida Felt like and how I look back at it.
Our favorite track from the album was "Walk In The Top"? Could you share some background about how the track was made?
Yes! Although Fly Geez is all about my trips down south I have a certain affinity for a place in Ks. The Captial which is Topeka. ITs known as Top-city so ITs all about "a walk in the top". It was my experiences there that fuled the Florida run. In this song im explaining an infamous neighborhood during infamous times of that town. A walk in the top is talking about what we saw and went through walking through an area known as central park. They call it "the box". Thats where we made our names good and bad. This is the place "Kilo M.O.E" was born..
After 2 decades in the industry, you must have seen it all. However, a global pandemic is both unexpected and a first for everyone. Do you foresee the music industry changing as a result of the virus?
I might have had to crack my knuckles for this one. I absolutely forsee the entirety of the music industry changing yet at the same time will be business as usual. I built my record label on the premise of something like this happening but not necessarily a pandemic. Never seen this coming. However, in 2001 I seen coming a 100% digital content consumption enviroment. This is why we are so dug in with what we are doing. We are a 100% digital company. And I see the entirety of the entertainment industry moving toward this IF not already there. I see "movie theatres", "record stores", promo junkets all done primarily online. Its so many ways to look at this and how and why. We can approach the idea of this all differently however the end result will be 100% digital. Automation and AI within the confines of the lisener experience and "live shows" will be moving toward VR and other limited forms of peer to peer enjoyment. Just six months ago someone was still having the stale argument about CD's being relevant. Rather you beleive that or not it will not take away the fact that digital is off and running and the global pandemic has expedited this way!
Kilo M.O.E.
How has the pandemic effected you as a label owner and artist?
As Both, this has been a two sided coin. Early this year about three weeks before the Pandemic we acquired a digital radio station and network "Weonradio/Weonnation". Those numbers have been great and the growth just in transition has been like nothing we've ever done. Now on the flipside we'd planned to launch it at Sxsw which was cancelled due to covid-19. From there We had several other trips planned that didnt get to happen. Which were instrumental in the album release AND launch of the station. We are currently in the process of rearranging some things so we can meet the digital content demand. We've had things in place its just a matter of turning things on and resetting. Streaming wise our numbers are UP. Its hard to say how much of a difference the public appearances would have made but with a video scheduled and some in person interviews I think would have made significant impact being that numbers are up despite. This is a time all of our companies are being tested and what this will expose is our foresite or lack thereof.
What's next for you creatively and as an entrepreneur?
Wel creatively Ive been working with my Wife alot on her fashion company and brand "Nettabear". We've been slowly releasing custom fashion pieces that are high end. The goal is to make custom made and made to fit more accessible now that we are witnessing a vaccuum in the retail garment industry. Within the next couple of years we will expand this side of business and focus on branding this company and getting more Indie artists and entertainers utilizing custom pieces to stlye their movements. Also as a digital distributor look for us to be expanding into that market with long arms as we will be rolling out a specific site and campaign for our distribution services like audio and video. With this new system that is fully automated we are looking at increasing the overall catalogue 80% next year.
What can fans do to support your music and label?
Thats easy. @omgenterainmentinc on IG Facebook and The Website www.omgenmusic.com. All of our artists are there and also videos, content and what we may or may not be working on. IF you are an aspiring artist you may send your music there or for ad consideration support@weonnation.com. Streaming helps us all grow and also helps us reinvest into our artists and projects. Thank YOU!
