In the middle of cold and flu season, I like to be stocked up on healthy supplements to help my family avoid the worst of what germs are swirling around us. My usual go-to options are elderberry syrup, zinc and vitamin C. Now, I’m adding Fire Cider to my list.
It’s cheap and easy to make at home, and it works! I’m not going to go through all the health benefits of each of the individual ingredients, but the combination of them together is an amazing boost to the immune system.
Here’s how to make it:
1 Horseradish root (I only had the prepared version)
1 Ginger root
1 Onion
2 Lemons
16 Cloves Garlic
4 Habanero peppers (I only had jalapenos)
1 tbsp Ground Turmeric
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
Raw Honey
The ingredients are somewhat flexible, I’ve seen variations in the amount used of each ingredient, and some people add other citrus or spices as they desire. Feel free to experiment.
Next step is to chop everything up and put it in two quart size jars. What would work better is to just throw it in a food processor, rather than doing it by hand--I would highly recommend.
Finally, shake daily and strain the chunks out of your fire cider. As a quick note, be sure to put a layer of something between your lid and your cider, if it is metal. Otherwise, your lid will get all rusty and make the cider taste funny.
That’s it. Easy Peasy.
It’s yummy straight up in a tiny glass, and drizzled on various recipes. At least, I think so. My kids aren’t quite as adjusted to it…but perhaps with more honey :)
