I used to buy vegan hot dogs for my kids, then I learned how easy it is to make them. These are one of those items that taste just like I remember having as a kid (when I ate meat). I hope you enjoy these.
Serving is around 8 hot dogs
Ingredients
1 package (12 oz) extra firm tofu
1/4 cup finely ground yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup vital wheat gluten flour
1 tablespoon arrowroot powder or cornstarch
2 tablespoons safflower or grapeseed oil
1 1/2 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 3/4 teaspoons smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground mace or nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
8 hot dog buns (I use whole wheat)
Directions
Prepare parchment paper and aluminum foil, cut into 8 pieces around 4x6 each.
Add all ingredients except cornmeal, vital wheat gluten and arrowroot to a large food processor. Blend until smooth. Then add in cornmeal, vital wheat gluten and arrowroot. Blend until it becomes dough. Taking about 1/3 cup of dough place onto parchment paper, form into a hot dog. Roll parchment paper around the dog. Place in aluminum foil and wrap up, folding the ends. Repeat this for all 8 hot dogs.
In a pot place a steamer basket, add 4 inches of water or before it touches your steamer basket. Bring water to a boil. Put all 8 hot dogs onto steamer basket and cover pot. Let simmer for about 1 hour. Remove from steamer let cool completely before you either grill or saute as desired. (I usually just stick them into a container and then into the refrigerator, until I’m ready to cook them up.)
