The great barrier reef suffers from serious problems with the corals that build it. But perhaps at least part of the solution to his problem lies within himself, scientists say. Two new techniques of intervention in the reef state : assisted gene flow and assisted evolution are proposed in new studies . Both techniques use the existing genetic material of the reef to produce more solid corals by not using genetic engineering.
The main problem of the reef is decolorizing corals, largely due to climate change and atmospheric emissions. The natural processes of adaptation and acclimatization are developing, but they are not fast enough to cope with the global warming rate. That's why assisted gene flow techniques and assisted evolution are needed .
