Jeremiah 8:9
9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and
taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord;
and what wisdom is in them?
Solomon, the man the Bible calls the wisest person who ever lived (1 Kings 4:30), wrote: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10).
If you were to turn Solomon's words around, you'd have an apt word picture of the people of the Southern Kingdom of Judah in the days of the prophet Jeremiah. God had put up with these people for many years, and He had spoken to them through His prophets of their need to turn away from their wicked deeds. Yet they refused to listen and act on His words, trusting in their own wisdom and in the deceitful words of false teachers.
Today, those who follow Jesus Christ need godly wisdom to navigate through a world that has its own brand of wisdom - one that seems to change almost daily. God calls His people to live in the wisdom He has provided through His written Word. Not only that, He promises to freely give us wisdom if we simply ask for it: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5).
That's a beautiful promise we should daily claim as our own.
