One reason why we need to read the Bible is because the word of God is our anchor in the storm.
When you make it a practice to read the Bible and pray every day, you will gain more knowledge about the Bible.
Over time, that knowledge will lead to wisdom and that wisdom will help you to maintain your peace and joy in any storm that comes your way.
When things are going well, we can tend to not give God the credit and ignore the things that bring us closer to Him, like prayer and studying the word of God.
Going to a good Bible-teaching Church is a great thing, but is it enough? Probably not.
Church is a once a week thing, but God wants to build an intimate relationship with you each and every day.
The Peace and Joy Anchor in Any Storm
If you've made the decision to seek an intimate relationship with God and obey Him no matter what, you will undoubtedly experience seasons of difficulty and uncertainty.
Your walk with God is a journey of faith, and there will be situations when your trust in Him will be tested.
Cling to the word of God and your troubles and doubts will be repaired and filled.
By taking the time to read the Bible and pray everyday you will gain an understanding of the vital importance of Christ in your life.
You may need to practice some if you don't have a lot of experience reading the Bible, but you will get better at it and you will find it very rewarding to develop wisdom, peace and joy that can only be learned from the Bible.
You may want to review Scripture passages you heard at Church or you may want to try the challenge of reading the Bible from cover to cover - this can bring a very broad perspective of God's word.
For beginners, I recommend starting with the Gospel of John.
God is Your Shield and Protector
Numbers 22:10-12
10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
God will shield and protect you just as He shielded Israel from harm when the people didn't even know what they needed protecting.
He caused other nations to be sore afraid of Israel and even went to unusual lengths to keep Israel from being cursed.
God was so powerful and convincing that even the pagan prophet Balaam had to submit to God's will and not curse Israel for Balak.
The Way, The Truth and The Life
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
Do not read the Bible with any skepticism, but trust God at His word and take it all in as the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
God's Word is absolute truth and a solid anchor when in your life you experience trouble or heart ache.
You may not know how God is going to bring about what He has promised you, including eternal life, but He is keeping every promise spoken through His Word.
He will never deceive you and He will never disappoint you, and He will never change His mind about what He has revealed by His Word.
The Word of God Prospers
Isaiah 55:8-13
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
You really want to be an all-inclusive part of God's great family and participating in things like prayer, Church and charity is part of the package.
Reading the Bible every day is another one of those things you should participate in to grow in your faith in Jesus Christ.
Strength, Guidance and Comfort
Romans 15:4
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
When things in our life go wrong we can tend to only turn to God as like an emergency button.
If this is you, it's okay, ask God for forgiveness for ignoring Him and try better to make the word of God part of your every day life so you grow closer to Jesus and to Him and are more prepared next time things don't go your way.
When trouble strikes like a tidal wave, God's Word is an anchor of strength, guidance and comfort to keep you steady.
Think of the Bible as God's love letter to YOU.
