Oh, this is such an important topic to my husband and myself. We know the world's culture is so much different than ours, but we still mentally cringe when we hear curse words. And we are always so perplexed when an otherwise intelligent person uses certain phrases that only a few years ago would have been grossly inappropriate in public.
We refuse to watch a program after hearing the third offensive word because that just indicates to us that more of the same will continue to be used throughout the rest of the program. It NEVER adds value to the meaning of the conversation. It could easily have been omitted.
When in our own home, my husband will gently remind guests that ladies or children are present and they will need to suppress colorful speech. If they are offended, they do not have to visit here again. Yeah, we are THAT serious about it. By the same token if someone is given to rough speech, we will make our visits into their home only on rare or necessary occasions.
It is a very real observation that "birds of a feather flock together" for a reason.
