Have you ever wondered why?
One reason commercial doors open outwards is to make escape during a fire easier. Shouldn't that same principle apply to your home though? You want to be able to rush out without being delayed. Fires often move much more quickly in a residential wood constructed home compared to a concrete and steel constructed office space too.
Another reason to have outward opening doors is to provide better security. You cannot use a battering ram on a door that opens outward. A criminal cannot kick the door down either. With hidden hinges and a reinforced frame, an outward opening residential door provides a much better defense.
If you are building a new home, consider outward opening residential doors. Make sure they are solid core ones, and have the best framing possible. Concrete and steel frames with steel doors provide the best defense. They don't have to be ugly either, and you can install beautiful doors that are also secure.
If you cannot replace your doors, at least reinforce them with door armor kits like these:
The pine wood door frame, short screws, and poor quality locks combine to make typical residential doors only take seconds to defeat. With a door armor kit and a good deadbolt, you can convert a weak door into a very powerful one. No one will be able to kick it down, and it will even resist battering rams.
