Ikari Warriors was the 3rd of the vertical scrolling war games released in the mid 80's. Originally an arcade title, it was ported to the C64 after the success of Commando & WDW2.
Music & Sound FX was not on the level of Commando but more advanced than WDW2, but the graphics were top notch for the time with a nice little graphical intro before the game began.
Game mechanics were pretty much the same as the aforementioned two games, but where it differs and comes into its own is that you can take over enemy tanks and helicopters to take the fight to the opposition. A big improvement!
Ironically, originally released by SNK this got a re-release in the late 1980's from Elite the distributors of Commando!
On replaying this, Ikari Warriors is hard but not as hard to play as the other two games and you can advance further into the game before the difficulty level is cranked up.
If offered the choice of the 3 titles i'd go with Commando for its iconic music, but this is a worthy contender.
