Fans of Louis CK’s comedy will love his new stand up show Sincerely Louis CK.
I’ve watched it three times since buying it four days ago and it might be his funniest show yet.
Which is astounding considering his incredible comedy legacy to date, and his high profile career-shattering global humiliation ever since being branded a (unconvicted) sexual pest.
Fans will know he’s been gigging small venues here and there, but also that he’s been absent from the media (and everything else for 2 years)
I wasn’t sure what the tone of Louis new show would be, considering he’s been so quiet. How had it affected his personal life and his comedy?
I don’t know how anyone who is subjected to that level of negativity could continue their lives as usual. Atleast, that’s what I initially thought.
However it becomes clear that, of-course, his whole onstage comedic shtick is always about a man who is nearing a mental breakdown, who is bitterly disappointed and angry.
The reason he is so funny is because he does this better than anyone else on stage.
One of his first lines in this show is something to the effect of ‘How have you guys been this last couple of years? ... anyone else get in to global amounts of trouble?’ which was received by a roar of laughter. That owning of the situation was genius.
Louis’ twisted stories on the most controversial topics possible have always taken us to new places, with new feelings. But it’s ok - Louis is guiding us the entire time, and shows us the joke. He also shows us our own prejudices too.
This show is no exception to tough territory, tackling subjects like the death of his own mother, paedophilia, sexual trust, atheism, religion, the disabled, jews and sex... amongst many many other awful things.
In a visual and aesthetic sense, his show looks very similar to his previous productions.
A minimal backdrop met with simple coloured up lighting and a neat spotlight on him. Oh and a stool with a drink, and a microphone. No frills - he makes it all about what he is saying and nothing else. The focus is totally his words and how he says them.
In short; this show surprised me.
It felt really fresh but in his recognisable style.
I don’t think we will ever know the truth about what happened in his personal life and I’m not sure if he should be considered dangerous or not.
But oh jeez can he make us laugh? Yes.
