Seveneves is a story of what happens when our Moon is destroyed by some unknown force and humanity is forced to move to space to survive. I've read most of Neal's work and I think of it as technology driven fiction rather than more fantasy based science fiction, although some of his book have some of that. This one has lots of details of the difficulties of space travel and interesting ways to work around them. He does have some good characters, but there are a lot of them, especially in the earlier part of the book, so I found it hard to get to know them. The book is split into two parts. The first is about how we get established in space and then it leaps forward several thousand years to the descendants.

I won't give away any more about the plot, but I'll say that I really enjoyed it. He's not the best at characters, but I don't really mind that if there's enough fun geeky stuff in there. His book Cryptonomicon about cryptographers is a prime example of that. With the way it ends there is potential for a sequel, but I doubt he'll do that as he's probably moved on to some new ideas.

My next read is the story of how Bletchley Park was save by Sue Black. I got my copy signed by her when she spoke at an event I went to.
You can see what I've been reading on Goodreads. I don't have enough time to read as much as I'd like to, but my current travelling is allowing me to catch up a little.
