The Gorai river is known as the Ganges and the main feeder of the Padma. It is an important river for southwest Bangladesh. The Gorai river originated from the river Padma in Hatshaharpur union of Kushtia district and flowed to the Nakol Union of Sreepur upazila of Magura district and fell into the Madhumati river. At one time, the main stream of the Ganges flowed through the river Gorai, although the Hughli-Bhagirathi was the original form of the Ganges.
The Gorai river originated from the Padma at Talbariya, 19 kilometers below the Hardinge Bridge in the north of Kushtia district. River flowed through Kushtia district and entered Jhenaidah district at Ganeshpur. Then, along the Jhenaidah-Kushtia border, entered the Rajbari district with a village named Chadar. Then Jhenaidah-Rajbari district, Magura district-Rajbari district and Magura district-flow along the border of Faridpur district and flow through Madhumati river through Narail and Bagerhat district.
Apart from this, the tributaries of this river like Barasa, Kumar river, Chandana etc. Boats and other small vessels move from the origin to the Kamarkhali in the monsoon, but in the dry season this part becomes unpolluted. Parts of Bhati from Kamarkhali are fairly navigable, the vessel can navigate throughout the year. The average width of the river is 450 meters from Narail.
Parts from Kamalkhali upstream from the estuary of the river are affected by the tide-down. Because of connecting with Padma, they work as a special partner in distributing goods through the waterways. Many populations have been formed in the center of the river. There is a lot of fish in the river, which is the livelihood of the people of this region. The coastal area on the Madhumati river is very fertile. So favorable for crop production.
