The German heavy metal group, Running Wild, was formed in 1976 in Hamburg, but soared to fame during the rise of the German metal scene in the early and mid-1980s.
Over the course of their career, they have released sixteen studio albums, three live albums, five compilation albums and six singles / EPs. Although their previous versions contained images and satanic themes, they later invented the subgenre of the "pirate metal" after the band released their third album in 1987, "Under Jolly Roger", with which they changed to historical and pirate-based themes, creating and influencing the so-called subgenre during the 2000s.
Although the historical letters were based on fantasy at the beginning, the letters of later albums were intensely investigated by the leader Rolf Kasparek in particular. From 1988 to 1992 (for the albums "Port Royal", "Death Or Glory", "Blazon Stone", "Pile Of Skulls" and "Masquerade"), the band wrote mainly lyrics based on the story, as well as lyrics about pirates as Calico Jack, Klaus Störtebeker or the little known Henry Jennings. The band also addressed topics such as the War of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo or the colonization of the New World by the conquerors. They have sold more than 1.8 million albums worldwide, making them one of Germany's biggest exports
