The 1st of December is celebrated with pride and joy by every Romanian, either at home or abroad. This day brings us all together, wherever we are, to celebrate Romania’s becoming an independent state.
The 1st of December became the official national day in Romania in 1990 and has been celebrated with much pomposity every year since then.
On 1st of December we celebrate the unification of Transylvania
province to Romania.
Romania as a state appeared first in 1859 when two Romanian principalities: Moldavia and Walachia. These principalities were under Otoman empire authority but they were autonomous.
In 5 January 1859 Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected as a ruler in Moldavia, and in 24 of January the same happened in Walachia. One ruler, two principalities, which meant these principalities were de facto united under the name of Romania.
After the Crimeean War it was a good opportunity to push for this unification because both the Otoman empire and Russian empire were weakened and France, Britain supported it.
In 1877 Romania joined Russia in its fight against Otoman empire. The Otoman empire was defeated and thus Romania became an independent country. It stayed that way until the Great War started (WWI) when it joined the Allies.
Romania fought against Germany and Austria-Hungary based also on the promise that if the Allies win Romania will get Transylvania, which was a long time a province of Hungary and later on Austria-Hungary
Allies did win in the end, even when Russia got out of the war due to the Bolshevik Revolution and we got Transylvania.
The unification was official in 1st of December
1918 and that became our National Day.
Happy National Day, Romania
