Judging by the media frenzy surrounding the royal wedding you’d be forgiven for thinking that all ‘us Brits’ are going mad for Harry and Meghan, I mean it’s currently 9.00 a.m. on the happy couple’s ‘big day’ and Sky News’ Live Stream is already in full swing… currently showing footage of the gradually massing crowds, which appear to be made up of disproportionately white females, probably of below average intelligence.
HOWEVER, as with everything else, media reporting of events can be horribly misleading, and I think this is the case with the royal wedding…..for starters, 50% of 'us Brits' couldn’t give a toss about the wedding either way: according to attitude surveys on public reaction to the royal engagement, we’re mostly indifferent to it:
There’s also the fact that the homeless of Windsor probably won’t be celebrating the event, given that the local police have been involved in seizing their Belongings Before the Royal Wedding in an attempt to ‘clear up the area’ - possibly in order to make sure ‘Brand Britain’ looks its best before the world’s media.
Another (extreme minority) group who won’t be celebrating will be any anti-royalist protesters, because they’ve probably already been arrested and locked up for the day, as happened on the morning of the last royal wedding. The video below shows some anti-royalist protesters on their way to do some ‘street theatre’ being arrested for ‘pre-crime back in 2011 a few hours before Kate and Will tied the knot.
The public at large don’t exactly have much to celebrate on a financial level either - it’s
costing the taxpayer an estimated £32 million to cover the security costs of the event, no doubt some of which has ben used to pre-arrest people who have used their freedom of speech to criticise the institution of royalty in the recent past.
And to top it all, despite her £400 million fortune, the Queen isn’t even prepared to stump up a free lunch for the 2000 ‘commoners’ who have been invited to Windsor Castle to celebrate the big day - the ‘normal’ guests have been advised to bring a picnic lunch.
Maybe that’s because that’s what the royals really think of us: worthless!
So while I wish Harry and Meghan as individuals all the happiness in the world, at the same time I also wish the institution surrounding them would just whither away.
