Lovely name for a lovely race, although I am fairly certain The Duke has never actually visited Pietermaritzburg :)
The race was started in 1927 by the then Pietermaritzburg Athletics Club, and is currently run by Collegians Harriers.
The course has been changed several times during the passed few years, at present the race starts and finishes at the very hospitable Bishopstow Hall.
The challenge is the different terrains you run through over the 16km, through sugar cane fields, dirt roads, about 4km of tar road and then trail for about 8km.
There is a beautiful stretch next to the river where willows and weavers can be seen.!
Also my birthday run, and an extra special one as I turned 50 :)
