CABO VERDE - SURFING
Windsurf at Murdeira
Cape Verde is the country of surfing, it is undeniable. Here, the wind conditions are particularly established and regular. The wind has not changed direction once in the 6 months that I have been living here! Between 15 and 25 knots almost every day and a very regular swell from the North, sometimes orienting East or West just to make all the surf spots work in turn! Rich in 9 main islands, the Cape Verde archipelago is mainly surfed on the eastern islands including Sal and Boa Vista.
Bay of Sal Rei
In Sal, the spots of Punta Preta, and Murdeira give the most beautiful waves as soon as the swell takes a bit of West. This is where the expert surfers meet when the conditions get heavy. But here, there is something for everyone, and while the sharpest ones chain their figures on the right of Monteglio, the beginners try their hand at the straight waves at the bottom of the bay. The decor is superb, deserted, there is no one else, and no construction 3kms around. The bay is about 6 km wide and the windsurfs can pull endless edges of full freedom. Further south, in Santa Maria, the decor changes. Admittedly, the bay is bordered by fine white sand, but it has been inundated with hotels that spoil the party a little for my taste. That said, it is here that those who came without equipment will find something to rent to slide in the bay or on Kite beach located on the east coast of the island.
Surfing at Sal Rei
Boa Vista is an island whose tourism is a little more scattered. The main bay of Sal Rei is the place to slide for all levels of practice. Here, the wave trains are formed by the rise of the seabed from the West and turn around the island to enter the bay. Anchoring is sometimes surfing for passing sailboats, Maesha can testify! The huge beach offers several surf spots that make it possible not to be too numerous in the same place. The atmosphere is good on the water, no wave owner here, the sea belongs to everyone. The entrance to the port offers bigger conditions for those who know. Windsurf, surf, kite, foil, etc ... Everyone is grouped in the same sector to enjoy a bay made for sliding!
