Well, about 2 years ago, I read some article about the health benefits of Olive oil while sitting in my doctors office waiting on a followup appointment. I had a TIA a few months earlier (mini stroke) and the doctor said my diet was terrible and had to change. The doctor said i MUST add some ruffage and vegetables to my diet (and exercise more and take pills and no salt, blah, blah blah) or risk another episode. You know the drill. Did i mention that all i ate was meat and potatoes (and pizza and pasta and bacon) lol.
I have been a meat and potatoes man my whole life. Never had more than one bite of salad (the official no thank you helping in my family) in 53 years (I'm 55 now). I got my greens from animals that ate greens, that has to count for something. Anyway, my wife loves salad, but i refused to eat it because of the type of dressings (and i have tried one bite of many) she put on it. I detest sour cream and any type of vinegar and dry salad just doesn't work, so i never ate any.
So I decided i had to come up with a dressing i could stomach and i decided to start with Olive Oil. I put some on a fresh Romaine leaf (while the wife was at work) and it didn't taste horrible, but it was missing something. (I only knew it was romaine because that is what it said on the package) I had to figure out what you could put on salads that "I" liked. So I got a bowl and put in olive oil, then added some minced garlic and "hot shot" pepper and it tasted even better. Then I added freshly grated Parmesan cheese and diced cherry tomatoes, tasted it, but it was still missing something. It finally dawned on me what was missing. "MEAT" So i got a 3 slices of well done bacon and crumbled it up and tossed it on top and whalla, I had the makings of a great tasting (sour cream and vinegar free) salad dressing.
That evening, I prepared dinner as a surprise for my wife. I had her sit down and brought her her salad and an Italian dressing she likes. Then i brought out another bowl of salad and she said she only wanted one (much to my amusement) and i sat down and started eating my first whole salad (full cereal bowl full, aren't you proud of me?). The look on her face was priceless. I told her about my day and asked her if she wanted a taste of my creation. She took one bite and said it doesn't taste right. I laughed and brought out the rest of our dinner. Steak and potatoes.
The story continues. Due to these events, i decided to grow my own salad in an nontraditional way which lured me into the world of Aquaponics ... my next topic. Hope you liked my story. Its based on true life events.
