Samsung has presented its Galaxy Upcycling initiative at the developer conference SDC 2017 and presented a few possibilities for how old smartphones and tablets can still be used sensibly.
A bitcoin mining rack, which consists of 40 used Galaxy-S5 devices, as motherboard reported, was a big hit. Bitcoin Mining Rack from Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones. (Picture: Kyle Wiens, via motherboard) Many details did not tell Samsung to the Bitcoin Scratch Machine. What is clear is that the smartphones work with an operating system specially developed for upcycling. Android had previously been completely removed.
According to information on the rack alone eight Galaxy S5 together have more mining power and more energy-efficient than an older desktop PC with Intel's i7-2600 processor. However, the whole thing is hardly worthwhile. Because with conventional PCs Bitcoins are not scrapped for a long time.
In addition to the Mining Rack, Samsung has also presented some more interesting upcycling projects. A Galaxy S3 is so equipped with additional equipment that you can monitor and control an aquarium. The face detection of an old Samsung device was used - in a wooden figure in the form of an owl - for monitoring and access control.
Samsung: Upcycling Initiative with iFixit In its upcycling initiative, Samsung is working with the repair specialists at iFixit.
The chief executive explained that only the cooperation with the device manufacturer and the possible removal of the old Android version lead to a secure and future-oriented application.
Samsung has also announced the launch of a platform on which upcycling projects are collected and made available.
So far, there is not much more than a video, as well as some screenshots of the future website. There Galaxy users in the future should get ideas and share with the community how smartphones and tablets can be used for new purposes.
