Today is Bhogi festival, first day of 3 day festival of Sankranthi. Sankranthi is a harvest festival celebrated in South India, Maharashtra and some other parts of India. 2nd day is Makara Sankranthi and the 3rd day is called Kanuma.
Normally this is on 13th of January but this year, this is being celebrated today as per the calendar and time calculated as per planets alignment.
On the day of Bhogi, at dawn people light up bhogi fire with logs and throw the unused items and furniture into the fire. It symbolically represents burning all the bad habits, bad relations and staring afresh.
On this day, children are showered with Regi pallu ( Ber fruit/ Indian plum) , petals if flowers, coins and small pieces of sugar cane as a part of blessing.

Whole of Sankranthi festival is colourful as the women are competing for Muggulu ( Rangoli) in front of the houses and believe me lots of sweets.
