On the 1st of the month, 12 months a year, thousands of people gather to a seemingly normal house in Mexico City for a not so normal reason. The Santa Muerte (Saint Death).
With them they bring offerings like fruits, candy, cigarettes, cannabis and tequila. These are offered as they worship and cherish the deceased Patron Saint. Henriqueta Romero decided to set up an altar one day after worshipping in private for decades. It soon became a pilgrimage site. This Saint and the darkness that comes with it spread quickly amongst Mexico City's underworld. It began in jail and it is believed that criminals and societys rejected found comfort in it when the churches refused them. The Saint holds no prejudice and accepts everyone equally, making it perfect for the people who live outside of normal society. See the whole story here
