There is no such thing as normal. Cultural differences are foundations on which misunderstanding is formed. We struggle with this on our planet, but imagine if we were in a confederation of worlds where alien cultural differences could be so very vast. We can see this play out in a comic by Doug Savage. Perhaps the idiom "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water" makes no sense on another alien planet, because that is something they do on a daily basis. It's a very important thing to consider, when thinking about communication.
