Psychological projection is a person's way to get away from the contact, remaining in relationship with previous experience, and not with existing reality.
Why does a person need this? Simply because with the previous experience everything is clear and predictable, but reality is always unexpected. Or a person who has received a hard or traumatic experience in the past simply can not help, but transfer it to what is happening here-and-now.
A typical example of a projective response is frequent talks about others "he, she, they are such and such." In this case, as Ralf Waldo Emerson said: "Whatever expression you use, you can never say something that does not characterize you."
