1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; (1 Corinthians 13:4-5).
One of my favorite commercials on TV involves two people: a man and a woman sitting together in a conference room. Then the guy suddenly proclaimed his attraction to the lady. The woman as surprised as she was, also responded that she felt the same way. However, the man then turned his head toward her revealing that he was actually talking to another person on his mobile phone using an earpiece—hence the passionate confession was not meant for her. Oops!
There is no blunder in the love believers in Jesus Christ ought to have for one another as found in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 13. Paul in the book of Corinthians is not actually talking about the romantic kind of love, but rather the powerful and deep love that comes from God and evokes unity. That is the reason the previous chapter focused on the church's nature—the way it functions like “human body,” with each part playing its role (1 Corinthians 13:12).
The Greek word for the love Paul refers to is agape, which is also the word that is more times used in the books of the New Testament to describe the love God has for us (Romans 8:39). So, in summary, the manner in which we are supposed to love one another in the church reflects how God also loves us, and God's love is lavished on us abundantly, faithfully, and sacrificially. It is indeed no small thing to love one another as Jesus did. (John 13:34-35). God loves us so much that He willingly gave His life for us on a cross (1 John 3:16).
This should greatly renew our perspective of others in Christ's body. Members of Christ's body are not just friends or acquaintances we just ought to greet politely. We are also called show them love just as God loves us: Kindly, patiently, without recording wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5). Also by showing love to our fellow brothers and sisters in this manner, we will also learn to love God himself (1 John 4:20).
