As you read a passage from the scriptures, pause after each verse or phrase to hear what God can say. Consider how Jesus practices what you read. Think about how other faithful believers live the truth of God. Consider what may be preventing you from living the truth for yourself. As you feel your inability to live a certain truth, go before God in silence and humility. Admire clearly how incapable you are. Ask God to live His life in you, and to do for you all that you yourself can not.
Truly He will finish the work that began in you. Let me offer you an example. Suppose you're reading Juan 17. In this passage Jesus says to His Father: "I have glorified you in the land; I have completed the work you gave me. "Everyone has his own work but not everyone is doing the work that God has given to do. Everything you do that comes from pride, or to parade before the eyes of the world, or simply because it pleases your Old nature is not the work that God gives you. All this type of work it comes from the world, or from the flesh, or even from the devil. What God wants you to do is to act in those things that are in harmony with His nature within you. He wants to replace your old nature with His very nature. This will entail new thoughts and wishes. Here is the work of God. Consider the example of the believers who have marched ahead of you. Some of them had a lot worse than you. They were also weak, but they finished their spiritual career.
You do not speak in favor of God when you exhibit a temperament outside of control. His work begins with you wanting to get away from your old life. Meekness is your work, my God. Here is the work that You have given me to do. God may have called you to endure being wronged way. Do it with joy, for it will certainly please God. Remember that you are not called to be well served, but to serve Him well.Learn to be meek and patient with everything that disturbs you.
Every day is full of things like that and you will learn to deal with them. Each of these events will teach you to live in the presence of God. Do not trust your good intentions if they do not produce a sense of life within you. Seek to make you meek and humble. If you do something wrong that only affects you, repent calmly. If you have wronged others, maybe with an unpleasant word, then do some small act of kindness. Remember how gently and patiently God deals with you. Observe how He deals with you and from there learn to deal with others. Do not be discouraged by your mistakes. Never stop going to God.
