Man has always looked for ways to worship someone on earth because they do not worship the one they should worship, therefore they feel empty and satiate that space by making use of idolatry.
And idolatry is punished by God because God does not share his glory with anyone and Paul advises us in:
1 Corinthians 10:14
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry (The American Bible).
Idolatry is an abomination to Jehovah and anyone who practices it dishonors God and is condemned because of the effect it produces. God is jealous of his sovereignty and of his majesty and as He is our creator repudiates idolatry to other foreign gods.
Idolatry is not just about worshiping gods or idols made by men. Anything we want to excessively can cause idolatry.
Psalm 135: 15
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, work of the hands of man. (New American Standard)
If we are Christians, we have to take care of our hearts and pay attention to what we are loving or worshiping, unless we are worshiping or yearning for things that do not agree and are dishonoring God and the wrath of Him comes upon us.
As for idols, the Bible advises us:
Exodus 20: 4
You will not become an idol, nor any resemblance to what is above in heaven, nor below on earth, nor in the waters beneath the earth (New American Standard).
It is true and real that God questions idolatry and strictly prohibits idolizing images in the likeness of gods. Since if we idolize other gods we provoke the wrath of God upon us and God has destroyed peoples by the idolatry of humanity
The only one who deserves glory honor and praise is God to Him we must love him with all our heart and with all our soul since it is useless to worship other gods.
Worshiping other people's Gods is in vain and brings condemnation, it is in vain because the foreign gods have no mouth they do not hear nor can they do anything for humanity nor can they save.
