Basically Sci Fi used to be made by nerds for nerds and gatekept pretty heavily. Nerds tend to be a bit higher intelligence than the average person and like their entertainment to match. Problem is we started letting normal people, casual viewers who don't memorize all the technobabble and stuff you need to understand old style Trek, and they ruined the genre because studios started catering to draw them in. The target sci Fi viewer used to be college students and young highly educated professionals. Now it's more soccer mom's and blue collar workers.
