It is a chemical element found in 2008 that is very harmful to humans. But the element is thought to be a catalyst that maintains the presence of water on Mars.
The problem is, the conditions on Earth and on Mars are very different, where the effects of UV rays for perchlorates on these two planets will certainly be different. Perchlorates strongly react to UV exposure, where UV light on Mars is very high because the planet's atsmofer layers are very thin.
This will make the surface of the planet to be a dangerous ground for life. That way, humans will be difficult in producing food, such as planting potatoes or other plants.
