Maybe some of us assume that the purpose of education is to get a job. teachers or parents often give advice that leads to the future of work such as "study diligently, so you can get a good job and have a lot of money, and life will be happy." Such advice is often heard today. My question is "is it true that the purpose of education is just to get a job with a big salary?".
If examined further, the goals of an education is not only that but more than just getting a decent job. Education aims to create a perfect individual, regardless of what our profession after education, whether we as workers, as thinkers, as an informan, and others. Simply put, education is for us to become us a better and noble human being.
Thus education is not just to get a good job. The education to build the habit learning of learners. One of the most important learning habits that must be invested in self-students is the habit of critical thinking. Critical thinking is one of the student characters which are expected. Critical means understanding how an information is obtained and understanding how to judge the truth of an information gained. This is very important, Why? because most of our decisions depend heavily on the information we receive and how we process and evaluate the information.
In critical thinking, logic is the primary tool in evaluating information; whether the information is true or false. In decision-making, it is usually done by using induction logic and deduction logic. inductive or deductive is a technique for making conclusions.
Although we already know that logic plays an important role in critical thinking, building students' habits to think critically with logic is not easy because teaching logic does not ensure that students can apply logic. And vice versa, teach errors in logic, not guarantee students can avoid the mistake of logic.
So it can be said that the logic is a set of rules that are needed to evaluate the validity of the information. These rules are very difficult to be learned. many studies show that humans are easier using logic in the context of be controlled and embedded.
One of the most famous cases in deductive reasoning studies is an example of logic puzzles created by Peter Cathcart Wason in 1966. Example case "Wason Selection Task is:
You are shown a set of four cards placed on a table, each has a number on one side and a colored patch on the other. Face card in sight shows 3, 8, red and Brown. A card where you must restore to test the truth of the proposition that if a card shows the even numbers on one face, then his face red?
Science will not be beneficial if learned the wrong way, like memorizing formulas without understanding the concept, memorization methods to tackle the problem is one example of an error in the study field of science. But science may be very close to our lives if we could apply a scientific thinking method in evaluating the information we get.
That is to say a theory in the field of science should be supported by strong evidence. Among the theories with others has to be compatible, there should be no contradiction. Similarly, when we propose new hypothesis. An event could be predicted by reducing theory with deductive techniques is already known. The correlation between two or more can be known occurrences with statistical data. Learn the science correctly will train we use principles of logic in evaluating whether the information that we get it right or wrong. This process will sharpen our sharpness in thinking critically and use logic.
Conclusion:
When one ask us, "What is the importance of learning science?" The answer "depends on how to learn it". I think memorizing the formulas is not important. Because the one we train to think by using logical principles is learning the science correctly. A very important foundation when you want to study any discipline is to study science correctly. How we evaluate information and how our ability to understand something.
