We talk a little about the new documentary (2018) Do You Trust Your Computer? Links below:
A.I. isn't coming, it's already here. As humans, we've always used our tools to extend our reach and better our powers of control over our environment. This is something that has been uniquely human in times past. Now we are on the precipice of humanity's final invention: artificial intelligence, also known simply as A.I.
Even in their simplest forms, artificial intelligence such as machine learning, deep learning, and various other forms of neural networks have shown themselves to have robust real world applications that far exceed the capabilities of any one human or team of humans in a narrow area. But as the applications of these artificial intelligences grow more broad and their powers and reach more deep, we must begin to question what sorts of measures we'll have in place to prevent their misuse and abuse.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about A.I. that it's important to clear up. A.I. is not something that we can ultimately hope to contain. This is thing one. Don't think that by merely "applying it to good things" or giving it narrow access or control that you can hope to ultimately stop it from finding ways of circumventing any attempt at containment or control.
Moreover, it's important to realize that, at this point, it's impossible to stop their development. These technologies are coming. The only way not to develop them would be if each country promised not to make them, kept their promises, and trusted other countries and organizations not to make them. Going further, the requiste manpower, coding skills, and major resources required to make more and more intelligent A.I. systems is shrinking by orders of magnitude this year. Aggressive projections think that A.I.'s that look and feel totally human will be here in just five years. I'm a bit more prudent, I put the number closer to ten years.
It's a discussion that needs to happen, and the sooner the better. More in the video.
