I've always been a believer that a solid work ethic will get you far. Sure, you may not become filthy rich but you'll more than likely have what you need and a little more. I've always been content with that. Lately, I've been rethinking the solid work ethic concept.
No, this isn't a "the man is holding me down" rant post. It's a story post about robot machines and their effect on humanity.
A few years ago when I started to delve deeper into the blockchain I discovered Grantcoin. Grant Coin introduced the concept of Universal Basic Income(UBI) to me. I was unsure of this concept because I'm not about handouts. There is a sense of pride when you earn your own living. I like to be open minded so I kept studying it more. The more I began to understand the arguments behind UBI I began to understand it's not about handouts so, a few months ago I added Scott Santens to my twitter feed. He's a big advocate for UBI and always has interesting arguments for why we need it and he surely tweets about it!
Today's Tweet
There's a 10% chance of AI outperforming us in ALL tasks within 9 years. We need #basicincome ASAFP. https://t.co/lRzY8rhC10 @LeeCamp

Today's tweet made me do a double take and my head started spinning about the implications of it.

It's not news to me that machine robots and Artificial Intelligence are being developed to replace human employment. However, I've always been of the mind that a robot replacing a human creates another task that needs to be accomplished by a human, so it's never bothered me. For example, who is going to fix or program the robot taking over a human's job?
But did you notice the tweet? It says all tasks.
Secondly, I figured it would be years down the road before human tasks started to deplete human jobs. However, the Oxford Study/Yale Study Scott Santens is referring to estimates "there is a 50% chance of AI outperforming humans in all tasks in 45 years and of automating all human jobs in 120 years". The study also lists different percentile ranges in regard to years of when outperformance and automation could possibly occur, hence the 10% chance statistic given in the above tweet. Even a 10% chances of this "robot revolution" happening within 9 years is concerning.
Could you imagine a 10% percent chance of hitting the Lottery? The lottery system would be bankrupt!

Here is a chart provided by the Oxford/Yale Study of the milestones machines will be able to accomplish and approximately when. It definitely makes you think "What If?".

I was telling my wife about this study and I asked her "Guess who did the study?". She has the quirkiest sense of humor and responded "Rage Against the Machine?".
Her answer made me laugh, but it got me thinking. What if machines did start to massively overtake jobs currently accomplished by humans? How would the average human respond? Would there be a revolt? Would there be a new business sector with the stamp "FOR HUMANS BY HUMANS"? The questions went on and on in my head.
My mind eventually landed back to Universal Basic Income. Is this where the world is heading? Will we have no choice? Will it be a Living Income or a Poverty Income? If Businesses are decreasing their operating expenses and labor tax decreases where would the tax revenue for a Universal Basic Income derive from?
Would you accept leaving a job you love?
Would you accept a UBI not up to your living standard, if that was the only option?
Or would you Rage Against the Machine?
