Scientists in Ethiopia have started a project in which they aim to create the best chicken breed by mixing top chicken brands of the world. This project has been started in The Incubated Worlds research and breeding center which is located in Addis Abada, which is the capital of Ethiopia.
These scientists have been doing crossbreeding for 20 years and now they are close to produce the SUPER chicken which would be the best chicken of the world.
The scientists will select the different best types of chicken from the world and crossbreed them to produce best chicken breeds.
They are hopeful that the chicken which they will produce will be healthier, resistant to diseases and will also lay bigger eggs.
According to report of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, about 815 million people are living undernourished in Sub-Saharan Africa.
If this project goes successful, the starving continent will get some relief by eating better chicken and good quantity of eggs.
Olivier Hanotte, a scientist with ILRI in Addis Ababa, said: "What we want is ... an animal who produces eggs, which would grow relatively fast and can reach a weight of two to three kilos in a minimum amount of time.”
Mr. Hanotte has opinion that this move could empower women of rural areas who are often custodians of the birds especially chicken.
He said: "If you provide better chicken for these people, you give them a new way of income and empower women, who often reinvest in the children.”
