I found myself wondering whether more energy is packed into a kilogram of gasoline versus a kilogram of coal. I found the following list (courtesy of Wikipedia):
Note that the nuclear fuels surpass all other fuel sources by several orders of magnitude. Unfortunately, uranium is a limited resource. It looks like an attractive fuel source based on this fact, and based on the fact that it produces essentially zero pollution. Unfortunately, the NEA estimates that the Earth's uranium deposits will last us 230 years at current consumption rates.
Interestingly, although it's not included on the list I provided, antimatter surpasses nuclear fuel by several orders of magnitude.
