Kano's Computer Kit is a laptop you assemble from parts and it is geared for kids so you don't need extensive training in electronics, programming or computers to get started.

It's is based on the Raspberry Pi which is a CPU. The kit comes with color coded parts so the assembly is fairly straight forward, even for adults. To add to the experience, it has a transparent case and you can admire your hard work after it is assembled. Unfortunately, you can't see the electrons flowing throughout the circuit (just kidding). But with this see through case, it can assist with any future troubleshooting.

The computer is run off of Kano OS which is a linux based platform. It comes with apps, programmable games and a web browser. The kit is reasonably priced at a little over $100.
This is a great way to get your kids involved in all aspects of computing, not just the game playing. It will inspire some kids to pursue a future career in the hardware, programming or electronics.
