Hi everybody - This weekend I started a new Podcast together with my remote-partner-in-crime, Ingrid who is is the CEO of a startup called Appear.in. Together we'll be exloring (among other things) so-called #remotefirst companies - organizations that are fundamentally decentrilized, with no HQ. Excited? Hell yeah, we are! But first, a little bit of background, and why I think #remotefirst is the start of Management 2.0.
It turns out making a podcast requires a microphone, a computer and tons of lollies
Like many of you know, humanity is currently experiencing a digital revolution equal, or perhaps greater than, the industrial revolution. We are four decades into this "computer era" and today everyone has access to tools and computational power only before limited to governments and billion dollar multinationals. The internet has become the central nervous system of a hyper-connected world that is propelling us into an era of unrelenting, unprecedented and unimaginable innovations. Steemit is a good example of that.
However, this new era needs fundamentally new management models. Just think about it. Today's organizations weren't built for speed, they were built for obedience. Those early management pioneers, a hundred years ago set out to build organizations that were disciplined, not flexible. Structure, labor, processes and bureaucracy were introduced to help drive productivity and prosperity following on a military command model. I don't know about you, but for me, that stands in stark contrast to the needs of today's digital supercompanies whose business values are all about adaptability, innovation, openness, empowerment, transparency and purpose. In fact, if the the first wave of management science started on a foundation of centralization, it would appear the next is all about de-centralization.
It's starts with remotivation
Being physically de-centralized (as in no HQ), digital startups are inherently remote and thus throwing out the old playbook. Management is no longer just about control, but increasingly about trust. Management is no longer about top-down, but increasingly about (side-on and) bottom-up. Management is no longer just about maximising shareholder value, but increasingly about purpose and sustainability. These are the things we want to explore in our upcoming podcast.
Whatever Management 2.0 is, wine holds the key to it's secrets
So what can you guys expect from our Remotivation Podcast? Well, we're honing in on three things: 1) How does a #remotefirst company operate (we'll be interview the pioneers themselves), 2) What are the pros / cons of going remote (it can't all be good can it? :) and 3) What are concrete actions your company can take (if you're looking to gearing towards remote).
So, any requests? Who should we interview? (ps. nominating yourself is totally OK ) Let us know here: https://goo.gl/forms/OapCDj2zkyFidzub2
