On LinkedIn yesterday, I read a very thorough article on surveillance. A great counter-surveillance tip was revealed by the author however, and it is well worth sharing with my friends here on Steemit. Within the article he wrote about how PI's will mark a vehicle in advance of a mobile surveillance operation.
By mark I mean actually place a reflective sticker or other marker on the vehicle. That way as it moves through traffic at night, the investigator will very easily see it while shadowing the suspect. There are countless other ways that this can be accomplished too. As another example for day surveillance, he suggested adding a neon colored ball to an antenna.
What vehicle owner isn't going to notice a neon ball on an antenna though?
The bottom line is that if you suspect that you may be the subject of vehicle surveillance, make sure you check your vehicle for obvious new markers such as he mentioned in the article. Don't add unique identifiers to your vehicle that can be spotted from far away either. It would also be wise to check the undercarriage for GPS tracking devices.
Different states and countries have different laws regarding the use of GPS trackers, but your state or country may allow them. Even if they are not allowed, unethical investigators may still use them. Don't depend on the law to maintain your privacy. Many agents of the state and private agents will ignore the law in favor of their objective. You can hire Private Investigators, who specialize in TSCM (Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures), to scan your vehicle, work place, or home for surveillance electronics. If you are a corporate executive or have other reason to believe a scan would be worth your money, I highly recommend getting one done occasionally.
