Technology has changed just about everything in our lives ranging from the way we work to how we prefer to socialize. Even our deepest-rooted instincts related to sexuality and how we approach our partners are threatened to change in the highly technologized era we currently live in.
It is no novelty that technology and social platforms have long united their forces in a bold attempt to help us befriend and keep in touch easier. While many may argue that social media actually does more harm than good, others look far beyond the perils of Tinder and Twitter and announce a new sexual revolution fueled by those who refer to themselves as digisexuals.
What are these? To simply put it, individuals who satisfy their sexual needs via technologies. Such examples include virtual reality environments, sex robot or devices known as teledildonics or cyberdildonics (used to stimulate partners during remote sexual interactions).
While the latter still imply the presence of another human companion, sexual robots or sexbots will be able to successfully replace the presence of another individual and provide an intense and immersive sexual experience.
While sex robots are not available for purchase, not just yet, different companies have been working for a while on creating the perfect prototype, while also satisfying the user’s esthetical and sensory requirements.
Real Doll is one of those companies that aims to create a sexbots that is as realistic as possible. There is still a lot of progress needed before reaching the aimed result, as we are yet in the early days of creating effective AI mechanisms that don’t give us the creeps. Besides making a robot imitate human behavior, the next big obstacle is making it move like one. But all these issues are expected to be overcome if not in the near future, definitely during our lifetime.
While we may still need to walk a long way before seeing the perfect sexbot, VR (virtual reality) environments are seeing a fast development. Moreover, this technology is already in use and it implies more than passively watching pornographic materials. Users can access a virtual environment and, connected to sensory feedback devices, offer and gain sexual stimulation in ways that can compare to real life. Basically, the devices and the images perceived by the users create a visual and sensorial illusion that can not only simulate real sex but maybe even top it. VR environments leverage a blend of 3D stereo display and real-time positioning, providing new stimuli for the user who actually feels like he or she is actively taking part in the action.
As VR environments continue to grow and more companies focus on creating sophisticated sexual robots, at some point in the future, these technologies will probably end up tackling the sexual urges of many of us. Are we ready to embrace this new sexual wave that will change the way in which we relate to each other beyond the point of return?
