SEXUALITY - Decidedly, sex is not really a subject like the others. Nowadays, men willingly assume their "feminine" behaviors (like poetry) and women their "masculine" behaviors (like making jokes). But when it comes to sexuality, it's another story. As is the cliché, men tend to exaggerate their number of sexual partners and women, on the contrary, to reduce it.
If we doubted it, a team of psychologists from the University of Ohio , proved it: men would tend to increase the number of their sexual partners and to invent conquests. As for women, they would also tend to minimize their number of sexual partners
We tell the truth about everything except sex
To find out, the researchers asked 293 students of both sexes, aged 18 to 25, to answer a rather general questionnaire with 124 character strokes. Did they make dirty jokes, what a previous study had associated with male behavior? Did they lie about their weight, which had been associated with female behavior? Through these questions, the aim was to see how much their self-description would fit into these stereotypes identified with their gender.
In order to know if the participants were lying, some were connected to what was supposedly a lie detector that, in reality, did not work. Whether or not they were connected to this false lie detector, men and women had no trouble admitting that they frequently engaged in activities that did not match their gender. Nothing really outrageous, indeed, to see a woman doing bodybuilding or a man talking about love. But it is a question on which they have distorted reality ... sex!
Men connected to the false lie detector reported much less sexual activity than unconnected men, free to lie. But it was the opposite for women. "Men and women had very different answers when they thought they had to tell the truth," says psychology professor Terri Fisher. And if both sexes have lied, it is because of the stereotypes to which they are associated, and which still have a hard life.
As the psychologist explains, "there is something unique about sexuality that makes people more concerned with gender stereotypes".
Caught in the act of lying
Because in the collective imagination, men would be expected to accumulate conquests, even to lie on their hunting board. It would however be frowned upon for women to accumulate partners, at least above a certain threshold.
Evidenced by the survey for the American channel ABC News , published in 2010. Beyond the fateful number of 10 partners, men were much more likely to report having 10 or more partners. Below this figure, women were overrepresented. Yet women would have many more partners than they would like to say.
Terri Fisher knows something about it since exactly ten years ago she had done another experiment of the same type that we are interested in today . False lie detector, questionnaire, men and women had in 2003, about thpng same number of sexual partners. Ten years later, in 2013, they would have had more than men. The proof, if it were necessary, that the clichés are far from reflecting reality.
While this is only about the United States and two studies, Terri Fisher's conclusion that "gender differences in sex have almost disappeared" seems to be crying out for truth.
