Hello numismatic world!!! I Just wanna share this iconic steel penny to all of you. This is my first ever steel penny (Philadelphia Mint) and hopefully can hunt sooner for the San Francisco and Denver Mint.
A bit of history for non - collectors
In Dec 1942 During World War II, the U.S Congress approved the substitution of 1 cent copper coin to a steel penny in an effort to preserve some metal like copper which is needed and essential resources to help optimize success in the war. There was a shortage of copper which is essential in producing ammunition and artillery. Thus the change of composition of 1 cent from copper to a zinc plated steel penny.
Although steel penny is quiet common, still it is a collectible piece. It is one of the most widely known iconic U.S coin. The steel penny is the only silver colored penny ever existed in the history.
Note: penny coins are usually struct in copper planchet except 1943 and 1944 error steel penny.
