I was up in Ferry county, Washington yesterday, passing through a little town called Republic, where they use to mine for silver & gold. The big mining company that did most of this mining is called Hecla and they've been around in the Pacific Northwest for over 100 years.
Founded in 1891, Hecla Mining Company (NYSE: HL) is the largest silver producer in the United States. In addition to operating mines in Alaska, Idaho, and Quebec, Canada, the Company is developing a mine in the Yukon, Canada, and owns a number of exploration and pre-development projects in world-class silver and gold mining districts throughout North America.
They have this little monument at the edge of town.
Damn 2 million ounces of gold mined in 48 years of operations!
I have no idea what all the markings on this obelisk mean but it's kind of neat.
The last gold mine in this area closed in 2017 due to the rising cost of mining relative to the amount of gold they were producing, however, last year a Canadian mining company called Calibre made this announcement after doing some exploratory drilling:
Calibre Mining Corp. reported late last month that it believes property it owns 3 miles northwest of Republic in Ferry County contains 2 million ounces of gold, based on an analysis of recent drilling at its Golden Eagle Project.
Here is the article with more info. It does go on to say this, "Michael Heath, chairman of the Ferry County Commission, said environmental activists and political red tape stand in the way of any major new mining operations."
He goes on to say he would be, "absolutely amazed", if there was mining in this area in his lifetime 😅
