I've always enjoyed collecting Latin American coinage and so I though I might pull up a fun little coin I picked up quite some time ago. The 10 centavo coin was produced in Mexico from 1905 until 1914. Although it's not a real big coin it does has a nice design and is composed of eighty percent silver. Mexico has had more than it's fair share of political instability over the years but they still were able to produce some beautiful coins.
I had planned on sharing more of a historical background on Mexican history around the point in time this coin was produced. However once I tried to dive into it I realized that it was incredibly complicated as the Mexican revolution of 1910-1920 was coming. So rather than bore everyone with the long and complex history lets just go straight to the coin, a 1905 ten centavos coin pulled from an old scan of mine:
About the coin:
Country: United States of Mexico
Denomination: 10 Centavos
Composition: 80% silver
Diameter: 18 mm
Thickness: 1.18 mm
Weight: 2.5 grams
Edge: Reeded
Mint: Mexico City
Demonetized: Yes
Mintage: 3,920,000
The Obverse of the coin shows the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus with a snake in its beak. The reverse has a liberty cap at top and the denomination below surrounded by an oak and laurel wreath.
These are great to pickup because they are usually relatively inexpensive so even on a limited budget you can pick up some silver in the form of these coins. Of course the higher the grade the more expensive they are, I usually focus on lower grades because I like the silver content more than collecting value. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below and thanks for stopping by!
