Birds Hill Bomb is the first longboard race organized in Manitoba, the longest running race, and this year will be the 7th year putting it on! Honestly I own it all to the support from my local shops, Scam Skate, and the now closed Boarders Anonymous.
The History of Birds Hill Bomb
I had been running the How We Roll longboard community for a while at this point, but just always thought we'd need bigger hills than we had to make a race, a real race. I ended up finding inspiration from another longboarding community in Saskatoon, who raced on a hill that was also fairly small, and only really had one corner. I met them by following a skater who was skating across Canada for charity after he passed through Winnipeg, but you will get to see more about him in episode 5! After that I went to their yearly event called (S.L.U.G Jam ( Saskatoon Longboard UnderGround ) to participate in the race, and managed to place 3rd! When I got back I immediately made a plan to start a race at this location, and that is the history.
Episode 4 & BHB 5
Even though this was episode 4, this was shot at the end of the season, which also meant Scotty was at his most experienced point in his longboarding career. He managed win his first heat, but ended up getting beat his second heat. Either way the important part was he had fun, and we got some good footage for you all.
The younger skaters you see in the start of the video, ended up coming back last year, and came to some of our slide practices! I'm always happy to see people who ended up falling in love with longboarding after their first race, and this race is responsible for many people becoming dedicated How We Roll members!
In the open class we crowned a new champion, Spencer ( Hands Down ) Hildebrand, who has been hot on the heels of almost all the previous champs every year, so it was well deserved! Though I think the multiple pounds of muscle he's been putting on body building might have played a factor!
We managed to finish just in time as the rain started, so the timing was perfect! Luckily this year we didn't have any serious crashes or falls, so the event went smoothly.
As you might have noticed, Scotty went out of his way to also soruce all the music from local bands, which I really thought was a great touch! And everyone who came was very stoked to see themselves on TV after!
