Wood Duck Aix sponsa
Wood Ducks are arguably the fanciest looking duck in North America. With their helmeted look, beautiful colors, and secretive behavior they are always a treat to see. The females are much more discrete in their beauty, but are pretty wonderful too.
I love the blue coloration on this female Wood Duck with her ducklings.
We have some other pretty snazzy ducks to look at, and in their own way all are beautiful. Here are a couple in the Bucephala genus.
Barrow's Goldeneye Bucephala islandica
Bufflehead Bucephala albeola

Cinnamon Teal Spatula cyanoptera are among my favorites.
Our most common diving sea duck at times, the Surf Scoter Melanitta perspicillata is an eyefull with it's crazy bill coloration.
What is your favorite fancy duck?
Good birding and good day!
