Watercolor also aquarelle is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork. Long before oil was used in the preparation of pigment, watercolor painting had achieved a high form of sophistication. The oldest existing paintings, found in Egypt, are watercolors. Watercolors are water-based and non-toxic, so paints are thinned with water and paintbrushes can be easily cleaned with soap and water. They are also non-smelly. Watercolor works well with colored pencil, watercolor pencils, graphite and ink for creating mixed media pieces. The advantages of watercolor lie in the ease and quickness of its application, in the transparent effects achievable, in the brilliance of its colors, and in its relative cheapness.
