One of our favorite domestic holiday destinations is Lake Tisza (Hungarian: Tisza-tó), we go there every year for a couple of days. There you can find a good combination of village tourism, nature, sports and lakeside activities.
The Lake is the largest artificial lake in Hungary, which was created as part of the Tisza River flood control project. The first step was building the Tisza Dam in 1973, then they started filling it with water. It was finished in the 1990s, resulting in a 127 km² lake containing many small islands.
It is a paradise for birds and all sorts of animals like castors, turtles, deers and so on. The place provides places to nest, feed and rest for more than 200 species.
If you are ready to get up early I truly recommend participating in a fascinating early-dawn birdwatching boat trip with a local tour guide (all harbors organize such trips). The best periods for that are probably July, August or September.
You can see for example motionless grey herons standing as a statue, like the one I captured here. I love the way the bush is reflected on the water:
At the morning the water is quite cold, but the astonishing view and the peaceful quietness of the Lake is really great. Even my adolescent kids enjoy it, despite the 5 o'clock wake-up it takes. :-)))
Once we were lucky to see nests with few days old little birdies in them:
