Real Madrid is through to the Champions League semi-finals. A result that would not have been a surprise had it not come from such controversy.
Referee of the night Michael Oliver awarded a penalty kick to Real Madrid with only seconds remaining before the final whistle in stoppage time. Cristiano Ronaldo buried it, and Real Madrid advanced, 4-3 on aggregate, just when everyone expected the match to continue to extra time. But was the penalty decision the right call? Let's take a look at what happened.
Did Lucas Vazquez Dive?
In the photo below, Vazquez appeared to be falling before Benatia had fully contacted him. Benatia's hand was only just touching his back. A strong case can be made for a dive here.
Benatia Had Made A Clean Challenge
From the angle seen below, Benatia appears to have made a clean tackle even though the challenge was from a high kick and at an odd angle.
But...
It Was A Tough Call
Ultimately, it was a tough decision for Michael Oliver to make especially with the lack of VAR assistance. He chose to make that decision, and the decision is final. Perhaps with VAR, the outcome of this match would have been very much different. Thus this would only just make a stronger case for its inclusion in the next iteration of the Champions League next season.
In fact, as seen below, people can't seem to conclude as to whether the penalty was just.
