People making money off of clicks isn't new but It's never been this accessible.
I'm wonder what all this will mean if this website or another like it becomes widely adopted, could we be headed for something like "Nosedive" from Black Mirror. Although you could argue that is already the world we live in. But does anyone else think that monetizing our cat pictures might exacerbate this social issue. "Nosedive" is a satire of course but if you look at currency, as in part a representation of social status it doesn't seem to far off.
I don't that we could go back to the days before social media. I worry about the effects of ideological echo chambers on the internet are already having. For example this election cycle in the United Sates has been the most polarized in my life time, and I think that the internet played a big part in that. Go on a sub reddit that leans a particular way politically, left or right, and say something that goes against the group think. I'd wager you would be banned.
Now imagine if there was a monetary incentive to go along with group think. I know reddit gold but it doesn't seemed to be used all that much. So the incentive should be less.
Anyone have any ideas how to counter act this? I like the idea of steemit and plan to use it, I'm just hoping we can avoid some of the potential pitfalls.
