So here i was at this huge gathering... a funeral i'm sure..... it was high profile and there were a lot of high ranking persons from every facet of life, economic giants, political heavyweights, social juggernauts , but let me quickly hasten to conclude that the high profile is not what caught my attention. It was just important that i make note of it. So i was standing near the catering area and suddenly noticed a disturbance in the serene and composed atmosphere, i quickly located the source of commotion and my oh my.. i'm not too sure of the emotions which passed through my veins but trust me none of them were good, a drum of boiled eggs had been set down and left unattended and a bevvy of folk, were jostling and tussling to grab the eggs, i saw a guy who either had very big hands or was a skilled egg handler who had twelve (12) eggs in his hands, most were crushed , it was a pitiful sight. A woman who my lay eye could tell was a few weeks from expelling her load from the birth canal raced at a shocking speed towards the loot, she fought with the ruffians there and withdrew her hands full a wide smile of accomplishment on her face.
I turned my attention to a gang at a corner who were eyeing a stacked column of pulpy minute maid bottles and I began my count down; I didn't need to be a rocket scientist to figure what was going on in their minds. In about ten minutes when the most prestigious speaker was having his turn at the mic, security was slack, the column suddenly became shorter and crouched running and furtive glances and rustling grass was testimony of what had happened. Much to my disbelief, i saw a guy i knew coming towards me his arm muscles under strain from an Energade six pack, i quickly made use of the large number of people and put distance and unavailability between him and me... pilferage!!
I realized at that instant that poverty is not a financial state, that's only half of it. Poverty is a state of mind, the most extreme poverty is lack of dignity, how could someone steal/loot/pilfer/siphon from a funeral, that goes against all rules, norms and values I've been taught or seen since day one on this earth..
