A discarded banana peel. A piece of trash. It’s a useless piece of organic mass, yet it’s still bright yellow color against the monotonous grey and beige of its surroundings creates a more beautiful environment.
Just because it’s lost it’s use to most people, it now serves as a momentary decoration to brighten the day of passers by. Personally I don’t really care much for bananas in the first place as a food item, since they are chock full of sugar and not very kind to my body. But still, even if I feel like this simple tropical fruit might be my enemy, I can appreciate it’s colorful contribution to this dull scene.
Sometimes I feel like people can be the same way. There are certain people out there that others may regard as “trash” or invaluable to society, yet they still have value and contribute to the whole no matter how much others may try to hide or deny the fact. No person is trash, and if more people had the time to sit down, converse and understand each other better, we would all benefit as a whole.
Just because someone is poor, or disfigured, or a criminal, doesn’t take away their humanity. The quicker people in general realize this, the quicker societies ills can be solved. It’s too easy to pass by someone who is suffering, discarded and given up by so many others, and not feel the need to help. So many people dehumanize others to help themselves feel better about themselves, and that only hurts them as well as the others they are silently belittling...
