These days I see everyone wants to become an influencer. When I do promotion of my Airbnb on Instagram more than booking queries,, I get more requests from influencers asking if I would be interested in doing collaborations with them to promote my Airbnb. What they would do is they would come to my Villa with some group of friends, I have to sponsor their meals and in return they will make some reels and stories and promote on their Insta page. They have a big number of people following them so through their reels and stories my villa will get promoted.
Last year one such influencer had contacted me and that time I was new in the business so I decided to go ahead to promote my place. This person came with his group of friends for an overnight stay; they had fun and left and in return he made one very poor quality reel and shared with me. The agreement was something different. After that I kept messaging him and he stopped responding. His poor-quality reel I did not even wish to use because it would bring down my standards. Later someone told me that I need to take security deposit from these kinds of people and once they deliver what they have promised then I should return the security deposit. It was not a pleasant experience for me, so after that I stopped completely responding to all these influencers request.
Couple of months back, when business was low, I decided to give it one more try with a different influencer who I did some background check and found to be reasonable. This person also came with his group of friends. He made some reels but again they were so shabby and messy. These people had littered my place completely and with all that mess he made the reels, which if I would put up on any of my promotions would only leave a bad name for me. After this episode I decided never to call any influencer ever again.
All of them are only looking for freebies. I believe that the younger generation feels that this is an easy way to make money and get publicity. And in return they are getting all the fun for free. There are actually very few genuine influencers who deliver good content, else most of them have a mindset of getting free things from their influencer position. The millions of followers that we see on their page are all bought followers. I have also received such promotions, where if I pay some amount of money my number of followers will increase. It depends on how many followers I want and accordingly I need to pay the money. I would rather have low number of followers but all genuine and organic.
There are so many influencers now that even between them there is tough competition. Honestly, it's best to not deal with them for any product promotion. One can advertise in other ways and promote. Sometimes I think, who are these people, what have they achieved in life to become an influencer rather than just doing poses and putting up a totally faked up picture. I am not saying all of them are bad but yes there are very few genuine ones, and the genuine ones do have some achievements behind them, who are the real influencers. This word in the current times has completely lost it's significance and meaning.
